A.W.O.L.

A.W.O.L., an eighteen-minute fictional short follows, Keisha Johnson, an American deserter on her “walkabout” journey as she encounters children who decide to help her despite the risks. In the soldier’s dazed and disillusioned state, she accepts the children’s assistance and follows them back to their grandmother’s house. The encounter humanizes the two parties and an emotional connection is formed despite the overwhelming political and cultural obstacles.

AWOL was a joint production by American University, Washington D.C. and Notre Dame University in Lebanon, directed by veteran filmmaker B. Maher. The film was shot over five days in a desert located between the Anti-Lebanon mountains near the Beka’a Valley in Lebanon. B. Maher worked with a crew of professionals and Lebanese students embarking on the first joint project of its kind ever to take place in Lebanon.

The crew faced obstacles, such as, heat and traveling to an off road location in the back of a truck for 30 minutes each way. Despite the hindrances, the crew was able to finish the film with great success and a little bit of fun!

The King, The Lawyers, and the Cheese

In March 2002, Kraft delivered a lawsuit to a Wicker Park artist and web designer known as King (Censored by Kraft Foods). Kraft claimed that his website was unsavory and its content tarnished its trademark and caused irreparable harm. The artist, Stu Helm, had inked anything from erotic covers for Screw Magazine to children illustrations for the Texas Board of Education.

The documentary, The King, the Lawyers, and the Cheese, follows the life of Stu Helm during a yearlong court battle launched by Kraft Food Holdings. The documentary captures the personal moments of the artist as he struggles to save his artistic name and questions the notions of wholesomeness and Kraft’s control of the definition.

Adrift in the Heartland is the story of two women who weather the initial clash of their Palestinian- and African-American identities to share an intimate friendship. Aysha and Jasmine meet one morning when Jasmine crashes her car near Aysha’s apartment. Misunderstandings riddle their first meeting, but they form a tenuous friendship through their mutual love of Jazz.

Brigid Maher founded Tiny Leaps Productions. The company originated as a non-profit company that promotes innovative projects in the media arts and theater. In Spring 2003, Tiny Leaps Production became a for profit film and video distribution company.
